My First Singlehanded Overnight Open Water Voyage: Pensacola to Dauphin Island
Embarking on my first singlehanded overnight open water voyage was an experience I’ll never forget. Setting sail from Bayou Chico at 2 PM, my destination was the southeast corner of Dauphin Island, specifically the quiet and protected Pelican Cove. I dropped anchor at 4:30 AM, concluding an exhilarating 14-hour journey aboard my trusty sailboat, Quark.
Voyage to Destination
The trip covered 53 nautical miles, with the wind blowing a steady 25 knots and gusts reaching over 30 knots. Seas started at 2-4 feet, eventually building to 3-5 feet for a few hours. Despite the challenging conditions, Quark handled the seas like a champ, averaging 4.5kts. We ran with the wind and swell throughout the night, maintaining a steady course without the need to tack or gybe. The open water’s power and rhythm were a thrilling reminder of why I love sailing—just me, my boat, Belle, and the vast Gulf waters.
Navigating into Pelican Cove at night can be tricky if you're following charts. The entrance is often marked incorrectly due to tides and shifting sand bars, so caution is essential. I relied on my instincts and experience to safely enter the cove and drop anchor.
Anchorage at Pelican Cove
After navigating through the night, I dropped anchor in Pelican Cove, a peaceful cove on the southeast corner of Dauphin Island. I stayed anchored there for seven nights, enjoying the calm and protected waters. The cove was teeming with life; dolphins frequently swam by, and I spotted various birds soaring above. Charter boats and local fishermen added to the vibrant scene, and I even saw a few kite surfers riding the wind and waves.
Two other boats anchored near me during my stay, but each only stayed for a single night before departing early the next mornings. It was a peaceful anchorage, offering a perfect mix of solitude and the occasional visit from fellow sailors.
Marinas and Facilities
There are no marinas on this part of Dauphin Island, so anchoring is essential. The cove offers ample protection, but it's wise to ensure your anchor is well set, especially with the winds I encountered. Without a marina, boaters must be self-sufficient, so it’s important to stock up before arrival. A few stores are located inland, offering basic supplies.
Pirates Bar and Grill: The Island’s Gathering Spot

One of the highlights of my stay was the Pirates Bar and Grill. Located just off the beach, the restaurant features a pool bar and live music, creating a lively atmosphere every night. It’s accessible from the water—perfect for sailors like me who prefer the dinghy as their mode of transport. I’d pull up to the remote beach and take the boardwalk leading directly to the bar.

With a laid-back island vibe, the restaurant became my go-to spot for some relaxation and a cold drink after a long day aboard Quark. They offer a range of food options and a welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy to unwind after a day on the water.
Nearby Amenities
Dauphin Island is remote, but there are some amenities a few miles inland. I discovered two gas stations—one of which includes a Subway—where you can stock up on essentials. However, being prepared before heading to the island is advisable, as options are limited, and a quick dinghy ride may be necessary for provisions.

Final Thoughts
My first singlehanded overnight open water voyage was a test of skill and patience, but it was also a rewarding experience. The journey from Pensacola to Dauphin Island reinforced my love for the freedom of the open water, the joy of sailing Quark, and the thrill of discovering new places.
For those considering a similar trip, prepare for a remote but beautiful anchorage with plenty of opportunities to connect with nature and the local island culture. Whether it's spotting dolphins, catching live music, or simply enjoying the peace of an anchorage, Pelican Cove offers a little bit of everything. Oh yeah, one of the best sunsets I have had in a while.
